Penalised For Unrelated Links?

Ive heard a few things about google and other search engines penalising for links to non-relevant sites, anybody can confirm this? I link alot of my pages together even if they are un-related... should i stop doing this?

I don't know nothing about penalties one would get from google or other search engines, but from common sense it is clear that you would get no benefit from the linking of those non-relevant sites.

That's true ... Sometime google at least don't give you any benefit for unrelated links .... i don't think they penalize you for unrelated links ...

I think they will never hurt for unrelated links as long you are having free hosting . If you are having paid hosting that means you will have to put related links !

you mean you put a lot internal links in your own site?if so,i do not think this make any use.you should get more external links.

google discount unrelevant links, not penalized, as far as I know.

for all we know.. for example, I love sports, movies and IT news, does it make me irrelevant when I publish news about it?

google also discount the links from directories.. but you can still accept traffic from directories if there is any..

I don't think penalty is true. but discounting the relevant backlinks are confirmed

Why are they going to reduce or deducted the earnings ? The thread creator meant that the WIll PR and popularity go down due to irrelevant use of links !

I think that's true, because my cousin was banned because of plagiarism. IT could cause banning your site by google.

you're right. the topic and the links must be related to each other. it would be a waste of time reading irrelevant inquiries. you would be caught off guard.

That means we have to link to the sites that are related to our blogs, otherwise we will not get any backlinks, hence it will not increase our blog PR, right? So, we have to participate in those sites which are having similar topics to our blogs, then only it'll benefit us, am I right?

I am wondering how does Google check for the relevance.

You will still get backlinks even though you are linked from an irrelevant site. Regarding PR, as long as the site you are linking in have high PR, you will get PR juice from it.

No Google does not. I'm a SEO here in Finland.
Link is a link. Think for example cnn.com having page rank 10.
It must be linked by news topics like "FBI fugitive did something"
and so one. If Google would penalize from that then cnn.com would not have page rank 10. An who would link a rival site to another ? Think for example a car sell site, why it would link to another car sell site ?

you should why are you linking to a golf site if you are blogging about food ..search engine bot will see it as a non related link ...you should stay with your niche as much as possible and avoid link farm

Link farm is a place where comes outbound links all day.
Google can detect that. I worked for a client 2 years.Started from page rank
0 new site, now having page rank 6. Strongest links comes from unrelated portals.
It's better and valuable when it comes from a related content, but don't refuse strong
unrelated links. Google does not penalize for unrelated links, get related if you can - but only
asking you how do you do that for a commercial site ? And there should not be buy links programs -that way your dead

But how can google know if your site is unrelated or not? Isn't that Google getting more strict now?
