Is shoutbox effective?

Do you all find it is effective to put shoutbox / chatbox in our site / blog?
sometimes, people use shoutbox just to spam their link.

oh yeah! i love having a shoutbox! people can leave me important messages instead of leaving them as comments on the blog entry. and i like the way that it also links the username to the blog of the guest, so that i can also return the favor of visiting his or her blog. i have one in my blog.

Yes, I think the shoutbox is an effective tool. Some people have trouble with commenting at Blogspot. Some say cannot read the word verification (which I have disabled now), some doesn't want to have blogpsot account (which my blog enable Open ID) and sometimes Blogspot has downtime. So readers and friends can still have the choice to leave a comment at my shoutbox. My shoutbox can delete spammers, manually of course.

It depens on how big your forum/site is. If it's small i think it's useless but it its a big forum it work ! I have seen people conversating for hours in shoutboxes, if someone spam mostly 10-100 people saw it and report it to a mod/admin =)

but i think there is some diffrance of comments right? you no need to delete it?

You know , shoutbox , isnt really something of anything like a big chat app
or anything , its just a simple means of letting you visitor communicating
with each other, and if thats all that you want...them to be able to do , then its quiet effective as it does the job

yes i think a shoutbox is an effective tool in getting messages across faster. i think it helps a blog or site if it has a shoutbox of its own.

I used to have a a shoutbox of shorts (was it tagboards? I forget.)on my blog, but after it fell inactive my poor box fell to spammers, and I deleted it because I couldn't be bothered to delete all the spam.

It's good for a quick answer, but when it comes to chatting I prefer realtime chat (e.g. irc)...and for comments I prefer real ones, they're more permanent. ^^

Well yeah shoutboxes are effective in any active site as it helps members to communicate with each other and increases the activity there.

But it really does depend on personal preference...it might not work very well on very small communities if people don't like to use it in the first place. For example, a forum I was just looking at just had a vote, which fell to majority against setting up a chatbox there.

Chatboxes are good for random fun or chatting, but when it comes to things like, say, reporting dead links I'd much rather have it in an actual comment, too.

Well the main purpose of shoutbox is to provide a easy communication between members and not using it for reporting links etc. that is for forum purpose.

But yeah it maybe used for support, which members which never dislike.

i agree with you, we can miss some important information if we use only chatbox or shoutbox.
but as an admin of a site of forum, your member will feel happy if you always online and they can interact directly with you.

yeah i forgot to add this in my previous posts. The members feel more secured and happy with the forum because admin is in direct contact with them.

i agree with you, there are a lot shoutout box taht are free to use, some are very attractive, with a lot of picture, and some are also very simple, but user friendly..
